THE LAKEWOOD RANCH
EDUCATION & ATHLETIC STRATEGY
A Tactical Guide to Zoning, Private Prep Admissions, and the New "High School AAA".
1. The Public School Landscape
In Lakewood Ranch, your address strictly dictates your educational destiny. Property values are tied to the boundary lines for A-Rated institutions like Gullett Elementary and Lakewood Ranch High School. However, the map is shifting.
The New Player: "High School AAA" (Opening 2027)
A new, $144 million high school has officially broken ground at the corner of Rangeland Parkway and Post Boulevard, directly adjacent to the Premier Sports Campus. Scheduled to open in August 2027, this state-of-the-art facility will relieve overcrowding at Lakewood Ranch High.
Strategic Implication: Families purchasing east of Lorraine Road or in the "Greenbrook" villages must carefully monitor rezoning maps. This new campus will likely become the zoned school for these areas.
The Current Zoning Split
Manatee County is currently redrawing attendance maps for the 2027-2028 school year. If you are buying a home today with a 5th or 8th grader, assume their high school zone may change. We can help you navigate "Founder's Provisions" (grandfathering rules) where applicable.
The Charter Disruption: Lakewood Ranch Prep
Lakewood Ranch Preparatory Academy (K-12) utilizes the W.I.S.H. model (Wellness, Innovation, Science, Health). It is a tuition-free charter that requires a lottery for admission. It functions like a private school without the tuition, creating high demand and extensive waitlists.
2. The "Scholar vs. Athlete" Audit
The Scholar Track: Pine View School
Located in Osprey (approx. 35 mins from Lakewood Ranch), Pine View School is consistently ranked the #1 High School in Florida. It is a gifted magnet, not a zone school. Admission is by rigorous IQ testing and academic referral only.
The Athlete Track: IMG Academy
For the elite athlete, IMG Academy is the global standard. The new "High School AAA" is being built directly across from the Premier Sports Campus, creating a massive athletic corridor. Many families relocate to Lakewood Ranch to enroll their children as "Day Students" at IMG (20-min commute) while maintaining a luxury home lifestyle.
3. The Catholic School Pipeline (Faith-Based Prep)
For families seeking a traditional Catholic education, the "Fruitville Road Corridor" offers a seamless K-12 solution located just 15-20 minutes south of Lakewood Ranch via I-75.
Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School (9-12)
A distinguished college preparatory institution known for its "Cougar" athletics (State Champions in Football/Volleyball) and 99% college acceptance rate. It provides a rigorous faith-based alternative to the secular private schools, with a strong sense of community and discipline.
St. Martha Catholic School (PK-8)
Located on the same Fruitville campus (Bishop Nevins Academy), St. Martha serves as the primary feeder for Cardinal Mooney. It emphasizes a STREAM curriculum (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, Math) and consistently tests in the top 20% nationally.
Special Note: The campus also houses St. Mary Academy, which specializes in supporting students with diverse learning needs, offering a comprehensive solution for families with multiple children requiring different academic environments.
4. The Secular Private Prep Landscape
For families seeking a non-sectarian private preparatory experience:
The Out-of-Door Academy (ODA)
Sarasota’s premier college prep school. The Upper School (6-12) is located right in Lakewood Ranch, offering logistical ease. It is known for its STEM centers and arts programs.
Saint Stephen's Episcopal School
Located on a riverfront campus in downtown Bradenton (approx. 25-30 mins). Known for its global leadership program and marine science curriculum.
5. The Transfer Protocol
Moving from NY, IL, or CA involves specific bureaucratic hurdles.
